Photo Enforcement on the city streets of Phoenix

I saw a “photo enforcement” truck/SUV today parked on the sidewalk with lights flashing taking pictures of motorist driving South on Central Ave here in Phoenix. I was kind of happy to see something like that. Arizona motorist need all the HELP they can get. I say that because most of them will not help themselves by voluntarily taking a driving class or defensive driving class.

I stopped to chat with the guy for a few minutes. He was kind of hesitant at first but I was persistent. Now don’t any of you crazy Arizona motorist go and shoot the man. Like that nut on April 21st, 2009. He is only doing his job catching motorist that are VIOLATING the traffic laws and rules. Some folks are angry at Julian Assange and Wikileaks they are too busy looking out and not taking the time to look inwardly. This is what we desire for Arizona motorists that inwardly each motorist would police themselves. Why do you have to speed and/or run red lights? This is the action of a LAW BREAKER! Civilized folks don’t do these kinds of things, right?

The photo enforcement truck is a part of the City of Phoenix. The old photo enforcement units were part of DPS and have been removed along with the cameras that were part of the highway landscape. Don’t you motorist miss those cameras? The majority of you LAW BREAKERS didn’t pay the fines anyway. What are we going to do with you? In my world we would just take your car and drivers license for 30 days (smile). Then monitor how you would act once back on the road. Apparently issuing fines to LAW BREAKERS’ is not the answer. Remember to smile for the camera while driving on our roadway traveling above the posted speed limits!

Pedestrian Vigilance

As a pedestrian in Arizona traveling the city streets of Phoenix vigilance should be priority number one. This should be the priority for everyone traveling in Phoenix and throughout Arizona. I’m sure the bicyclist traveling in Tempe a few nights ago who was hit and killed on Rural and Southern by a motorist making a left turn would like to take back his decision. Not that he made a wrong decision he had the right of way but I still must be cautious and give myself an alternative so that if the car does turn I can escape a collision. As a pedestrian I think like this. I have learned not to TRUST motorist. It was over 25 motorist that nearly hit me within a 3 month period that caused me to produce the “How is Your Driving?” show. Since then there have been many more incidents with latest being today.

I am walking in a westward direction on the North side of McDowell heading toward 3rd Street. There is a car coming out of the drive way and the car is completely blocking the sidewalk. As I approach the car the driver doesn’t move, I look back at the oncoming traffic and cars are in all three lanes. The “slow” lane closest to the curb the car has slowed down and the right turn signal is on. To continue walking (exercising my right of way) I need to walk in the streets and walk around this motorist that is blocking the side walk. As I start to move he (the driver) starts to pull out but I start to raise my hands, open my mouth and express my self and finally he YIELDS the right of way and lets me pass. Under normal circumstance I would not have to put up with this; however, this is the norm in Phoenix and Arizona today.

A pedestrian needs to know the rules of the road, the driving laws and rules; traffic laws and rules so that they can exercise good judgment. Some readers could say that in the above example I could have went around the vehicle that was blocking the sidewalk. I believe that everyone should respect the laws and rules and therefore follow them. I should not have to walk behind a vehicle because the vehicle should not block the driveway. It was the attitude of this driver that I wanted to correct. He knows he’s wrong! This is the very attitude of the driver of the vehicle that hit and killed the bicyclist and drove off like the coward he or she is! This is CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR people! It starts with little things like blocking driveways, intersections, and sidewalks; not stopping at stop signs or red lights, speeding then it gets more ambitious until someone is killed. I am an “old pro” who has been blessed so far, but what about our children? Many of them have not been so fortunate. Our children do not have the mind set that I have developed. They are energetic, playful, and in their own world not paying attention to motorists with attitudes. I tried to get into the Phoenix Union School District to share with them my program that teaches our youth about traffic and pedestrian safety but I was told they don’t have a “driver education curriculum or program.” Everything these schools do today is geared around testing AIMS testing.

Remember Vigilant means – to keep watch, stay awake, alertly watchful especially to avoid danger from Arizona motorists with attitudes!

Launching a new marketing campaign

Most of the time when I post an article on this blog, I write about an issue that is related to driving and traffic safety. Today I want to talk about a program we are launching that will address driving and traffic safety. As you may know we produce a television show called “How is Your Driving?” The show can be viewed by those residents living in Tucson, Sierra Vista, Douglas and Benson who are either Comcast or Cox cable subscribers on Tuesdays at 7:30pm and/or Saturdays at 1:00pm or by anyone that has internet service at these same days and times by logging onto: www.accesstucson.org/whatsontv/watch_online/

In Phoenix each Saturday we will be washing cars at valley Auto Zones. This program is called the “Car Wash Fundraising Event.” It is obviously designed to raise funds for the show but also make motorists aware of the driving and traffic safety epidemic in Arizona.
We want to highlight some of the most dangerous intersections in metro Phoenix such as 32nd Street and McDowell, 35th Ave and Dunlap, 67th Ave and Indian School, 27th Ave and Camelback, 43rd Ave and Thomas and others. In just four years there have been over 100 injuries at each of the above locations from automobile collisions.

We will also be helping the homeless by giving a few individuals the opportunity to earn income each week by assisting us in washing cars. Every Saturday we will be at a different location to reach a different segment of the population and make them aware of this issue.

Please check out web site www.howisyourdriving.com for dates and times, bring your vehicles to be washed tell a friend and we will have DVD copies of the show, our new book, CD game/quizzes for sales for your driver education needs. Help us to save a life and give economic life to a few homeless folks by supporting our efforts to provide driver and traffic safety education to www.azdot.gov/mvd/Statistics/crash/index.asp a needed Arizona population.

Also if you would like to volunteer or donate cash, supplies, etc. Call 602.449.8034 or go to our website and click on the “support” button.

Do the people of Arizona really care?

Who are the people of Arizona? We are talking about you, motorists, law makers, politicians, police, traffic engineers, driving instructors, school administrators, teens, seniors, bicyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians, insurance companies, auto makers, health care providers and more do we really care?

Care about what? Care about the driving and traffic safety epidemic in the United States of America and specifically in the state of Arizona? Arizona was ranked in the last survey this year 49th ahead of South Dakota out of 50 states for traffic safety. To some this may seem shocking, alarming, or surprising with all of the chatter about photo radar cameras and DUI, but Arizona has been failing in the area of traffic safety for years.

The three statistics I like to quote are since 2000 Arizona averages 140,000 collisions, 40,000 injuries and 1,000 fatal deaths. In ten (10) years that 10,000 people dead!
For those of you that are only concerned about money this translates into about 3 billion dollars lost revenue annually since 2000! Arizona is losing both its human resources and its economic resources all because of the way it allows its residents and others to travel within its roadways and highways.

Where is the desire and will in Arizona to face this epidemic head on? When is Arizona (Phoenix) going to rise from the ashes and transform itself and the nation into something beautiful? According to the survey automobile crashes is the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 4 and 34 and that in 2008 an estimated $230 billion was lost in property and productivity losses, medical and emergency bills and other related costs due to automobile crashes in the United States.

I say this is no accident, this is a collision!

Teen Driving

I ran across several articles on this topic at the time and they all referenced the “auto safety group” in the same manner. The topic was raising the legal driving age for teens in Arizona. One article starts off with the words “an influential auto safety group.” In my mind if this auto safety group had so much influence they would use it to influence drivers across the board to obey the traffic laws and rules!

Sure enough teens are having problems and have become a problem but not as a result of their own doing. I was taught that “children learn what they live.” When I was 15 I had a driver education class offered at the high school I attended. How many 15 year old teens in Arizona can do the same? In Arizona driver education is not a priority and in many instances has been eliminated from the schools curriculum. Therefore, the teenagers are dependent on parents to teach them what they know. These are the same parents that have become drivers that do not wear seat belts, stop in the middle of the crosswalk at stop signal lines, never look both ways, and makes “Hollywood” stops when making right turns.

This obviously, isn’t the person you want teaching teenagers how to drive but this is the person you have ordained to be their instructors! I say if the “influential auto safety group” is so concerned and really wants to show some influence why not pay to put driver education back in the Arizona school system. With qualified teachers and instruction teen driving will no doubt improve. Currently, the only alternative is the driving schools. The problem here is driving schools are not free. Not all families can afford to do this besides everyone that I talk to that drives swears that they are “good” drivers! Therefore, why should I pay for driver instruction for my child when I can teach them myself? This is called the rat race! This has become a vicious cycle of denial and ignorance that has lead to annual collisions of 130,000, 30,000 injuries and 1,000 fatal deaths in Arizona.

Understanding the meaning of "right of way."

I’m standing on the corner of 3rd street and McDowell on the North West corner waiting for the red light to turn green. As it turns green, I proceed to cross but there is a car in the right lane facing south that wants to turn right on McDowell. The driver accelerates but has to put on the brakes because I’m two feet into the cross walk. I turn and look directly at him and the expression on his face; I wish I had my camera so I could show it to you. He is pouting like a little child because he could not do what he desired when he desired it.

There is such a thing as “right of way.” When both the driver and pedestrian have the green light at the same time the driver or motorist must YIELD the “right of way” to the pedestrian. As I was standing on the corner, while the light was red the driver could have turned right then, as long as no traffic was coming from an eastward direction to the west. If drivers have forgotten these things maybe they should call up the Bondurant School of Driving and enroll in a class for dummies that have forgotten the driving rules and laws.

This is not the first time that this particular incident has occurred to me and I’m sure others. What disturbs me most about this is the attitude of the motorists. They clearly display impatience, arrogance, no respect, rudeness, vanity and lack of courtesy. This is the part of drivers especially Arizona drivers that I want to attack. There is a thing called “sharing the road” but how can you share the road with someone with an attitude like this?

As I get a few blocks further down to Roosevelt and 3rd Streets two motorists run the red light. The light is red and they never slow down not to mention stop and just make their right turns. Hey, am I “crying like a little baby?” Am I knit picking? I guess it depends on your perspective. I think that the 43,000 people that are injured from motor vehicle collision each year in Arizona is UNACCEPTABLE! My aim and goal, as a pedestrian, is not to become one of the over 1,000 people that loose their lives from automobile collisions in Arizona each year. Something has to be done. As a pedestrian I’m doing my part. But Arizona motorist still have the same old funky attitude!

It’s a thin line between “freedom” and “enforcement.”

As a motorist in Arizona or any other state you have the freedom to drive as you please as long as you have secured the proper requirements: vehicle, drivers license, registration, insurance, and have proven that you are well able to operate your vehicle. You have also agreed to follow a host of rules and regulations. By following all of the above requirements you as a motorist are now given the freedom and privilege (not the right) to drive your vehicle.

Enforcement of the rules and laws you must follow will come as motorist step outside of the laws and rules given; now is the enforcement of these rules and laws an “invasion” on you or is it just the consequences of your actions? I have heard some say that the photo cameras are a violation of their rights, or invasion of their privacy. But if you as an Arizona motorist have stepped over the bounds, violated the traffic laws and rules you have given up your freedom and forfeited the privilege to operate a motor vehicle, right?
Ok, at least you deserve a ticket for speeding or whatever your violation was, right?

Come on, let’s reason. Without laws and rules we would have total chaos. Each motorist must, in truth “police” themselves, by obeying the traffic laws and rules. But you are not going to do that. You are going to speed, run red lights, commit hit-and-run collisions, etc, etc, etc, I say that because of the statistics! The statistics don’t lie. The statistics give us a very clear picture of what you have done and we can calculate from the past records what you will do in the future.

Will a camera slow you down, will a ticket slow you down, will a fine slow you down, will impounding your car slow you down, will revoking your license slow you down, will jail time slow you down; the only thing that has slowed you down is death, a fatality. And unfortunately, it was the victim, and not you (the culprit) that was killed. Case in point, a young man sat in jail for committing a DUI. He got out of jail and was driving a pick-up truck, of course, with no license or insurance, and ran a red light killing the woman driver and injuring the two children in the car, and of course he was drunk!

Enforcement is necessary, you as motorist don’t have sense enough to enforce yourself. If you did there would not be over a thousand fatal automobile deaths each year in Arizona. Why are you so out of control? I want you to look at yourself. Don’t get mad at me. Get mad at your out of control self. Get mad at your wreck less driving. Why are you in such a hurry? Why are you so angry and aggressive? Why are you so rude? Why are you so sensitive? I thought you were a “Christian!” Why are you so busy that you need to drive and eat, shave, sleep, read, talk on the phone, text and put make-up on all at the same time? Why are you so stressed? Why is the line so thin when it comes to getting Arizona motorists to do something simple like obey the traffic rules and laws?
